In 2004 Michael Franti decided to ‘walk his talk’ and traveled to the war zones of Iraq, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. This wasn’t a USO green zone sponsored visit – Franti and his team organized a trip that would take him to the core of the red-zoned, war torn neighborhoods of Baghdad, the West Bank and Gaza Strip armed with only a guitar, video cameras and the intent to experience first hand the human cost of war. Throughout his journey he shares his music with families, doctors, musicians, soldiers and everyday people who in turn reveal to him the often overlooked human cost of war. Out of this expedition, Franti has produced and directed a compelling documentary film titled I Know I’m Not Alone. With its guerrilla style footage captured in active war zones, the documentary is unlike the many academic and politically driven pieces in the marketplace, instead offering the audience a sense of intimate travel and the opportunity to hear the voices of everyday people living, creating and surviving under the harsh conditions of war and occupation.

While this Spike Lee installment of The Directors includes observations from actors Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Alfre Woodard, Wesley Snipes, and others, the real value of the hour-long program comes from the interview with Lee himself. While clips from all of Lee's films up to 1996's Get on the Bus illustrate most of Lee's cinematic achievements and thematic concerns, his own words are the most revealing and instructive. Often (mis-)perceived as a provocateur whose films are more confrontational than entertaining, Lee is aware of his tenuous place in the Hollywood scheme; what matters to him, ultimately, is the body of work by which any artist must finally be judged. He's notably stung by the fact that his great film Do the Right Thing lost the 1989 Oscar race to Driving Miss Daisy, observing, with ample justification, that the latter film offered a comforting image of a black man that white audiences could more readily accept. Through ups and downs, Lee remains pragmatic about the film business, allowing the consistent quality of his films to speak for itself. Of the other interviewees, Ossie Davis is the most perceptive, but when he makes the fascinating suggestion that Lee should remake Malcolm X when he's older and more experienced, you're instantly reminded of Denzel Washington's conspicuous absence. It's unfortunate that we don't hear from the star of Lee's Mo' Better Blues, Malcolm X, and He Got Game. It's a serious flaw in this otherwise engaging program. --Jeff Shannon

A transcendently poetic tour of the globe, Baraka was shot in breathtaking 70mm in 24 countries on six continent. Set to the life affirming rhythms of varied religious rituals and nature's own raw beat, Baraka is a visualization of the interconnectedness humans share with the earth. Spanning such diverse locales as China, Brazil, Kuwait and major U.S and European sites, among others, Baraka captures not only the harmony, but also the calamity that humans and nature have visited upon the earth. However, mere words do not do the film justice - Baraka must be seen, felt and experienced to be understood. A World Beyond Words Without words, cameras show us the world, with an emphasis not on "where," but on "what's there." It begins with morning, natural landscapes and people at prayer: volcanoes, water falls, veldts, and forests; several hundred monks do a monkey chant. Indigenous peoples apply body paint; whole villages dance. The film moves to destruction of nature via logging, blasting, and strip mining. Images of poverty, rapid urban life, and factories give way to war, concentration camps, and mass graves. Ancient ruins come into view, and then a sacred river where pilgrims bathe and funeral pyres burn. Prayer and nature return. A monk rings a huge bell; stars wheel across the sky.
