"I could see a gaseous substance escaping... That's when it definitely occurred to me that we were in deep trouble... Very shortly, we'd be completely out of oxygen. These were the thoughts of James Lovell and the rest of the crew of Apollo 13 as they heard the ominous explosion that robbed them of most of their oxygen, food and water - 200,000 miles from Earth.
Apollo 13: To the Edge and Back tells the gripping, true story of the catastrophic flight of the Apollo 13 and the heroic struggle to bring the astronauts back alive. With first-hand accounts from the pilots, their families, and the people of mission control, it documents a thrilling struggle against time and all odds and serves as a reminder that, in the words of James Lovell, "We do not realize what we have on Earth until we leave it."
Special DVD features include: scene selections and closed captions.

An hour south of Miami is the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. In 2004, the democratically elected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide was taken against his will from Haiti in an American helicopter. Having been deposed once with CIA backing in 1991, the 2004 coup d'etat was not the first American intervention into Haitian politics, nor will it likely be the last.
Featuring exclusive interviews with Aristide, commentary from a wide range of supporters and critics, and searing glimpses inside strife-torn Haiti, this award-winning documentary exposes the tangled web of hope, deceit, and political violence that has brought the world's first black republic to its knees.

Ashtanga, NY was originally intended as a concert film celebrating the Ashtanga style of yoga, now wildly popular in the United States and around the world. It follows the aging yoga guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois as he gives his final North American workshop in New York City in September 2001. Devotees were arriving from all over the world to partake in a rare opportunity to practice with the 86 year-old Jois. The 9/11 terrorist attacks took place in the midst of this celebration, and dramatically changed the meaning and purpose of this yoga gathering. In the difficult weeks that followed, Jois used the Ashtanga practice to help heal and fortify his diverse followers. This is no intructional video, and these are not your garden-variety contortionists. Ashtanga, NY is a real look into the intersection of ancient practice and modern life, New York-style.

A fitting companion to his globally popular feature The Big Blue, Luc Besson's Atlantis presents a mesmerizing, nonverbal experience of undersea wonders. Described by one critic as "a thinking person's Fantasia," this 75-minute documentary belongs on your DVD shelf next to Baraka and Koyaanisqatsi, glorifying ocean wildlife with a refreshing absence (apart from a pretentious spoken prologue) of narrative interference. In fruitful collaboration with composer Eric Serra and cinematographer Christian Petron, Besson traveled the world to capture the grace and beauty of such amazing creatures as Floridian manatees, Bahamian dolphins, Australian great white sharks, sea snakes in the Seychelles, and many others. Divided into thematic "movements" like Disney's animated classic (including a stunning sequence of manta rays set to a Maria Callas performance of La Sonnambula), this glorious film has been visually overshadowed by the spectacular BBC series The Blue Planet, but it serves a different purpose: It's not so much a documentary as a meditative journey, perfect for all-ages viewing. --Jeff Shannon
