I still remember vividly when some of the issues raised in the DVD Fire – Safeguard Your Family! were current and pressing ones. Smokey the Bear, I recall, was one of the most influential media that the Government could have dreamed up to educate the public about forest fire hazards. He spoke to the common family, not down at them – and that made all the difference. To see him again on this retrospective collection, fulfilling for the first time the purpose he was invented for, was a revelation.
I am amazed at how sincerely the Government addressed the escalating threat of fire in urban homes across the USA. Seen in the excellent viewpoint of hindsight that this DVD offers, one must admit that the effort to inform and prepare American citizenry about fire prevention techniques was a massive and effective one. We do take the fruits of modern living for granted, don’t we? It’s quite unimaginable that fire detectors were a novelty back in the 1940s and ‘50s – yet, the 1958 film clip by ADT clearly indicates that America had to be sold on the idea.
The fact remains that over 3,400 people die in home-related fires every year. When is the last time you and your family have sat down and thought the issue of fire prevention through? The material contained in this DVD is of timeless significance, and makes for excellent discussion. I strongly recommend that you earmark the next family weekend for this…there is a lot at stake.
